1. What is a habitat?

Answer: The surroundings where organism lives is called a habitat. The organisms depend on their habitat for food, water, air, shelter and other needs.

2. How is cactus adapted to survive in a desert?

Answer: Adaptations of cactus in desert:

  • It modifies its leaves into spines to reduce the transpiration
  • It also modifies its stem to carry out photosynthesis
  • Its stem is covered with a waxy layer to retain water and prevent loss of water
  • Its roots penetrate deep into the soil to get more surface area to absorb water

  1. The presence of specific features, which enable a plant or an animal to live in a particular habitat, is called adaptation.

5. Give an example of a non-living thing, which shows any two characteristics of living things.

Answer: Example of a non-living thing is motor bike. Its characteristics like that of living thing are that it needs energy to work and it shows movement.

6. Which of the non-living things listed below, were once part of a living thing?

Butter, Leather, Soil, Wool, Electric bulb, Cooking oil, Salt, Apple, Rubber

Answer: Butter, leather, wool, apple and rubber were all once part of a living thing.

7. List the common characteristics of the living things.

Answer: The following is the list of common characteristics of living things

  • Growth
  • Need food
  • Respire
  • Respond to stimuli
  • Excretion
  • Reproduction
  • Movement

5. Explain, why speed is important for survival in the grasslands for animals that live there. (Hint: There are few trees or places for animals to hide in grasslands habitats)?

Answer: Speed is an important factor for grassland animals as they can be easily eaten away by the predators. They have to run to save their live and they should not fall prey to their predators. Also there are less trees for the animals to hide in the grassland.
