Q)

There are two numbers such that the sum of twice the first number and thrice the second number is 100 and the sum of thrice the sum first number and twice the second number is 120. Which is the larger number?

[Corporation Bank (PO), 2009]

  • Explanation

Let the two numbers be x and y

    and 2x+3y=100

    Again, 3x+2y=120

    2x+3y=100  ---×2 (multiply by '2')

    3x+2y=120  ---×3 (multiply by '3')

    we get

    4x+6y=200 ---Eq(1)

    9x+6y=360 ---Eq(2)

By subracting Eq(1) and Eq(2) we get

    ⇒ -5x=-160

    ⇒ x=32, y=12

    Hence, larger number is 32.
