Practice Test Discussion

Q)

If three pipes P, Q, R can fill a cistern separately in 8, 6 and 20 hours respectively, then what is the time taken by all the three pipes to fill the tank when all pipes are simultaneously?

  • Explanation

According to the formula, If pipe A  and B fills a tank in x and y hours respectively, but a third pipe C empties the full tank in z hours then the net portion filled in 1 hour when all of them are opened together is xyzxy+yz+zxhours.

    So,

     8×6×20(8×6)+(8×20)+(6×20)=960328=12041 or 23841hours

The tank will be filled in 23841 hours when all the pipes are opened simultaneously.

    Hence option C is correct
