Practice Test Discussion

Q)

A, B, C are three pipes connected to a tank. A and B together can fill the tank in 6h, B and C can together fill the tank in 10 hours and A and C together fill it in 712h. Calculate the time taken by all the three to fill the tank.

[SSC CGL 2013]

  • Explanation

According to the formula, if pipe can comletely fill a tank in x hours, then the portion filled in 1 hour is 1x

    So,

    Time taken by A and B together is 6 h A+B=16---Eq 1

    Time taken by B and C together is 6 h B+C=110---Eq2

    Time taken by C and A together is 6 h C+A=1712=215---Eq3

    Adding up all the equations,

    A+B+B+C+C+A=16+110+2152A+2B+2C=5+3+4302A+B+C=1230A+B+C=1230×2=15

Therefore, pipes A, B and C together can fill the tank in 5 h

∴ 110th part of the tank will be filled by the pipe in 1 hour.

    Hence option D is correct.
