Q)

A water tank has three taps A, B and C. A fills four buckets in 24 minutes, B fills 8 buckets in 1 hour and C fills 2 buckets in 20 minutes. If all the taps are opened together, a full tank is emptied in 2 hours. If a bucket can hold 5 liters of water, what is the capacity of the tank?

[CAT level]

  • Explanation

    Tap A fills 4 buckets in 24 minutes ⇒ 244=6 minutes

    Tap B fills 8 buckets in 1 hour ⇒ 608=7.5 minutes

    Tap C fills 2 bucket in 20 minutes ⇒ 202=10 minutes

    In 2 hours,

Number of buckets filled by tap A ⇒ 1206=20 buckets

Number of buckets filled by tap B ⇒ 1207.5=16 buckets

Number of buckets filled by tap C ⇒ 12010=12 buckets

    Total number of buckets filled ⇒  (20 + 16 + 12) = 48 buckets

Total capacity of the tank = Total number of buckets filled X Capacity of each bucket

     ⇒  48 x 5 = 240 L

    Hence option A is correct.
