Q)

If two pipes function together, the tank can be filled in 12 hours. One pipe fills the tank in 10 hours faster than the other pipe. How many hours does the faster pipe take to fill the reservoir?

  • Explanation

Let us suppose the fester pipe fills the tank in x hours

and then the slower pipe fills the tank in x+10 hours

When both the pipes are opened together, the reserviour will be filled in 12 hours

     xx+10x+(x+10)=12x2+10xx+x+10=12

    Upon cross multiplication,

    x2+10x=12x+x+10x2+10x=12x+12x+120x2-14x-120=0 x=20 or -6

Because x cannot take negative value, the faster pipe will fill the reservoir in 20 hours.

    Hence option A is correct.
