Practice Test Discussion

Q)

A tank is fitted with 8 pipes, some of these fill the tank while some of these empty the tank. Each of the pipes that fills the tank fill it in 8 hours, while each of those that empty the tank empties it in 6 hours. If all the pipes are kept open when the tank is full, it will take 6 hours to drain the complete tank. How many of these are filling pipes?

  • Explanation

Let the number of filling pipes be ‘x’

So, the number of draining pipes will be (8 – x)

    As per the question,
Each of the filling pipes can fill the tank in 8 hours.
So, in 1 hour each of the filling pipes fill 18th of the tank

Hence, in 1 hour x filling pipes will fill n8th of the tank

    Similarly,
each of the waste pipes can drain the full tank in 6 hours.
So in 1 hour each of the waste pipes will drain 16th of the tank

Hence, in 1 hour (8 – x) waste pipes will drain 8-x6th of the tank

If for 1 hour, all filling and draining pipes are opened 16th of the tank gets drained

(water filled in 1 hour – water drained 1 hour) = 16th of the tank

    Therefore,

    x8-8-x6=-16

(As the tank is getting drained we have negative sign)

Upon cross multiplication and solving the equations we get

    14n-64=-814n=64-814n=56n=4

     Hence option B is correct.
