Practice Test Discussion

Q)

Three taps X, Y, Z together can fill an empty cistern in 120 min. Tap X alone can fill in 180 min and tap Y alone in 140 min. How long will tap Z alone take to fill it?

  • Explanation

    According to the above given formula, If pipe A  and B fills a tank in x and y hours respectively, but a third pipe C empties the full tank in z hours then the net portion filled in 1 hour when all of them are opened together is xyzyz+xz-xy hours.

    According to the question x+y+z=120

    So,

     120=180×140×z(180×140)+(140×z)+(z×180)120=25200z25200+140z+180z120=25200z25200+320z

    Upon cross multiplication,

    12025200+320z=25200z3024000+38400z=25200z3024000=25200z-38400z3024000=13200zz=302400013200z=229.09 minutes

    Therefore, the tank will be emptied in 229.09 minutes.

    Hence option B is correct.
