Q)

A cistern has two pipes. the empty cistern is filled in 120 min by the first and the full tank is emptied by the second in 80 min. Calculate the time required to fill 34th tank when both the pipes are opened.

  • Explanation

According to the formula, if pipe A can comletely fill a tank in x hours and pipe B can empty the same tank in y hours, then the time taken to fill the tank when both the pipes are opened simultaneously is xyy-x hours.

    so, 120×80120-80=960040=240 min

Hence, full tank will be filled in 240 min when both the pipes are opened simultaneously.

But the question is to calculate the time taken to fill 34th tank.

    So, 240×34=180 min

    Hence option B is correct.
