Practice Test Discussion

Q)

Three taps are fitted to a water tank. The empty water tank is filled by the first and second taps in 30 and 40 h respectively. The full cistern is emptied by the third tap in 50 h. If all the three taps are opened simultaneously, the empty cistern will be filled up in____

  • Explanation

6According to the formula, If pipe A  and B fills a tank in x and y hours respectively, but a third pipe C empties the full tank in z hours then the net portion filled in 1 hour when all of them are opened together is xyzyz+xz-xy hours.

    So,

     30×40×50(40×50)+(30×50)-(30×40)=60,0002000+1500-1200=60,0002300 or 2623hours

Hence, the tank will be filled in 2623 hours when all the pipes are opened simultaneously.

    Hence option B is correct.
