Q)

If three taps are opened together, a tank is filled in 15 hours. One of the taps can fill it in 19 hours and another in 20 hours. What is the working nature of the third pipe and how does it work?

  • Explanation

    Let us consider the third pipe to be a filling pipe which fills the tank in x hours

    then,

    According to the If three pipes A, B and C can fill the tank separately in x hours, y hours and z hours respectively then, the time taken by all the three pipes together to fill the tank is  xyzxy+yz+zx hours.

    So,

     19×20×x(19×20)+(19×x)+(20×x)=15380x380+19x+20x=15

    Upon cross multiplication,

    380x=15 380+19x+20x380x=380×15+29x×15380x=5700+435x5700=435x-380x5700=55xx=-570055=-103

    Here negative sign implies that the pipe is a waste pipe and it emties the water in the tank in 103 hours.

    Hence option A is correct.
