World-Class tourist amenities unveiled at Konark Sun Temple

  • A world-class interpretation centre and other tourist facilities for visitors were inaugurated at the Konark Sun Temple, coinciding with Utkal Diwas - Odisha's foundation day.
  • Inaugurating the facilities, Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the Sun Temple is Odishas pride and it is important that the world is made aware of this architectural marvel, for which the interpretation centre is a step in that direction.

Jammu gets its first tulip garden at Sanasar

  • Situated amid lush green woods with trekking trails, Jammu's first tulip garden at Sanasar is attracting nature enthusiasts from all over the country.
  • Sanasar is located in Ramban district of Jammu region with the snow-clad Nathatop peak in the backdrop.
  • This is the first tulip garden of Jammu region and second after the tulip garden of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The first tulip garden of Jammu has come up at Sanasar health resort.

Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb launches state component of PMKVY in Agartala

  • Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb launched the state component of Pradhanmantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (PMKVY) in Agartala.
  • PMKVY is a skill development initiative of Government of India aimed at encouraging aptitude towards employable skills and increasing working efficiency of probable and existing daily wage earners, by providing quality training to them.
  • Tripura has thereby become the first North East Indian state to implement state component of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) through Directorate of Skill Development (DSD).

Odisha Public e-library opens in Berhampur

  • Odisha Public e-library set up by Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) and Odisha Society of America (OSA) has started functioning from the Town Hall.
  • The e-library will give a boost to the library movement of the state and help computer literate students.

Eighth Regional 3R Forum in Asia and Pacific was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh

  • 3R stands for – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

  • During the course of this event, participants engaged in high-level discussions on policies, shared useful information and committed to support implementation of 3R projects in member countries.

  • Theme of this event was ‘Achieving Clean Water, Clean Land and Clean Air through 3R and Resource Efficiency – A 21st-Century Vision for Asia-Pacific Communities’.

25 MW waste-to-power plant to be constructed in Gurugram

  • A power plant costing Rs 502 crore will be constructed in village Bandhwari of Gurugram district to generate electricity from waste under the Integrated Solid Waste Management Scheme.
  • To be set up by August 2019, this plant would generate 25 MW of electricity.
  • Among the announcements made by the chief minister for Bandhwari village were waiving of house tax in villages included in the Municipal Corporation (MC) area for the next five years, half of the expenses on their domestic power supply to be borne by the MC, and a four-km road to be constructed from Sector-58 till village Baliyavas.

Kochi to host India Skills Kerala 2018

  • Kerala will host the India Skills Kerala 2018 as part of the World Skills India 2018.
  • The event is aimed at identifying and training talents to get medals at the World Skills Competition Kazan 2019.
  • Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE), the State Skill Development Mission (SSDM) and Industrial Training Department under the Department of Labour and Skills are spearheading the activities for the event.
  • The proposed India Skills Kerala 2018 is an avenue provided to the youngsters in the State to showcase their vocational skills.
  • It also aims at generating interest and creating awareness among the general public.

Delhi, India’s first city to have a policy to compensate consumers for unscheduled outages.

  • Lt Governor Anil Baijal has approved the Kejriwal government’s proposal mandating an hourly compensation of Rs 100 to consumers in case of unscheduled power cuts.
  • As per the proposed policy, power discoms will have to pay their consumers for unscheduled power cuts, after first hour, at an hourly rate of Rs 100.
  • With the LG’s approval, Delhi will become the first city in the country to have a policy to compensate consumers for unscheduled outages.
  • There are three private power discoms including the BSES companies BYPL and BRPL, and the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) that supply power to the city, barring areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Cantonment.

Digambarpur West Bengal India's best Gram Panchayat

  • The central government has declared Digambarpur gram panchayat in South 24 Parganas district as the best panchayat in the country.
  • There are 2.5 Lakhs Gram Panchayats in the country the central government had selected and Digambarpur under Pathar Pratima block has emerged the best among those 1000 gram panchayats.

PM Modi award for Manipur’s Karang – India’s first cashless island of the country

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured bureaucrats for making Manipur’s Karang the first cashless island of the country, and implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and other priority initiatives of the Centre.

  • Modi awarded civil servants for smooth implementation of four priority programmes - Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban and Rural), Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, and for promoting digital payments.

  • Also, Awards were given away for innovation in public service.

  • Karang island, a remote and backward region, was cut-off from the (Bishnupur) district due to insurgency for a long time.

Diu Smart City first in India to run on 100 per cent renewable energy during daytime

  • The Diu Smart City has become the first city in India that runs on 100 per cent renewable energy during the daytime, setting a bench-mark for other cities to follow.
  • Diu had been importing 73 per cent of its power from Gujarat till last year.
  • The city has developed a 9-MW solar park spread over 50 hectares rocky barren land, besides installing solar panels on the rooftops on 79 government buildings, generating 1.3 MW annually.

Bengaluru Smart City to develop Intelligent Traffic Management Solution

  • Bengaluru-To improve traffic management in Bengaluru Smart City, a prototype of an intelligent traffic management solution is currently being tested in collaboration with the Electronics City Township Authority (ELCITA).

  • It will provide traffic information that is currently unavailable, and help improve management of commuter traffic.

  • It involves capturing video streams from several cameras and processing them using artificial intelligence so that typical traffic management tasks such as vehicle detection, traffic density estimation and control of traffic lights can be automated for real-time performance.

Sunderban Reserve Forest to get Ramsar site status

  • West Bengal government has given its approval to State Forest Department to apply for coveted Ramsar Site recognition under Ramsar Convention to Sunderban Reserve Forest.

  • Once it is conferred Ramsar site status, Sundarbans Reserve Forest will be largest protected wetland in the country.

  • There are currently 26 sites in India recognised as Ramsar wetland sites of international importance, including East Kolkata Wetlands in West Bengal.

A first of its kind Israeli Modern Art Exhibition to be inaugurated in the Capital

  • The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel in India and the Petach Tikva Museum of Art, Israel is organizing an exhibition titled ‘To the End of Land’-contemporary art from Israel on the occasion of 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
  • The exhibition inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi in the presence of the Minister for Culture (I/c) and Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, Dr. Mahesh Sharma.
  • The exhibition - open to the public throughout May 2018 - will revolve around connection of human beings with land, territory, locality and identity projected through innovative modern art pieces and installations.

Surat railway station to be 3rd in country to have ‘airport-like’ facilities

  • The Surat railway station will be the third in the country and the second in Gujarat after Gandhinagar to be developed as a world-class facility under a Railway Ministry station redevelopment programme.
  • The station will be equipped with several “airport-like” amenities under the ministry’s ‘Rs 1 lakh crore station redevelopment’ programme.
  • SITCO, a joint venture between the IRSDC, the Surat Municipal Corporation and the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation, has invited request for qualification (RFQ) and request for proposal (RFP) for the development of a multi-modal transportation hub at the station.
  • The hub will be built at a cost of around Rs 5,000 crore and is expected to be ready by 2020.
