  • India's first Madame Tussauds wax museum has been opened in New Delhi with 50 life-like figures spanning across history, sports, music, films, and politics, for the public at the iconic Regal building in central Delhi.

  • Madame Tussauds has been a successful tourist attraction in places like London, Las Vegas, New York, Orlando, San Francisco and Hong Kong.

  • The Delhi facility is the 23rd edition of Madame Tussauds.

  • Marie Tussaud was born as Marie Grosholtz in 1761 in Strasbourg, France.

  • Tussaud created her first wax sculpture in 1777 of Voltaire.

Kandhamal Haldi of Odisha to get GI tag

  • Odisha’s Kandhamal Haldi (turmeric) will soon get Geographical Indications (GI) tag.

  • Its registration was moved by Kandhamal Apex Spices Association for Marketing and was accepted under sub-section (1) of Section 13 of Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

  • Kandhamal Haldi is famous for its healing properties.

  • It is main cash crop of tribal people in Kandhamal.

Luxembourg To Become First Country To Make Public Transport Free

  • Luxembourg is set to become the first country in the world to make all public transport free, implementing the move in 2020.

  • The move is aimed at addressing environmental issues and the problem of traffic congestion.

  • Earlier, Luxembourg introduced free transport for all people under the age of 20.

Panama 1st Latin American nation to join Belt and Road Initiative

  • The Strategic Central American Nation, Panama became the first Latin American Country to join China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative after the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Panama.

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Panamanian counterpart Juan Carlos Varela inked 19 separate deals during the bilateral meeting.

India’s first underwater museum to open off Puducherry coast in INS Cuddalore

  • Indian Navy agreed to gift INS Cuddalore, a decommissioned Pondicherry-class vessel, to the Union territory of Puducherry for the creation of country’s first underwater museum.

  • The 60 m long and 12 m wide vessel was decommissioned in March 2018 after sailing 13000 nautical miles.

  • It would be sent to the sea bed at a depth of 26 m and 7 km off the Pondicherry coast to act as an underwater marine museum for scuba diving and snorkelling activities.

  • This would enhance tourism in the Uninon Territory.

  • It would also help in enhanced marine biodiversity and boosting fishing industry.

Kannur International Airport in Kerala began its Operations

  • The Kannur international Airport - KIAL in Kerala began its operations with Union minister for civil aviation Suresh Prabhu and Kerala Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly lighting the lamp inside the terminal building, marking the inauguration of the airport.

  • Later the first flight from the Airport to Abu Dhabi was flagged off.

  • With this, Kerala became the only state in the country with four international airports.

Lepa Rada becomes 24th district of Arunachal Pradesh

  • Arunachal Pradesh gets its 24th district – Lepa Rada,a day after Shi Yomi became a new district.

  • Lepa Rada is carved out of the Lower Siang district, comprising four administrative circles – Tirbin, Dari, Sago and Basar.

  • Basar will be the headquarters of Lepa Rada.

  • The state assembly on 29th August 2018 had passed a bill for creation of three new districts – Pakke-Kesang, Lepa Rada and Shi Yomi – in the state.

Nishidhi stone inscription from the 12th century was found at Nandi Basaveshwara temple, Karnataka

  • R. Shejeshwara, Assistant Director, Department of Archeology, Heritage and Museums, and Jagadeesh, historian, discovered the inscription during a field work undertaken in Harakere.

  • The inscription is of 60 cm long and 15 cm wide and is chiselled from a schist rock slab.

Bhubaneswar to host one of Hockey Series Finals in 2019

  • Odisha sports minister Chandra Sarathi Behera announced that Bhubaneswar is set to host one of the three Hockey Series Finals to be held.

  • India will host the second of the Hockey Series Finals, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) will host the first event.

  • The last Hockey Series Final will be hosted by Le Touquet, France.

  • Bhubaneswar had successfully hosted the Hockey World Cup in 2018.

  • The Hockey Series is open to national teams that are not playing in the Hockey Pro League.

National Workshop on Explosive Detection (NWED - 2018) was Inaugurated at High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) Pune, Maharashtra

  • Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Chief Atulchandra Kulkarni was the chief guest of the workshop.

  • A total of 200 delegates from different Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) labs, Army, CRPF, CISF, Police, Academic Institutes, Industry and other Security agencies attended the workshop.

  • HEMRL developed, OPX-Revelator, which is a portable, miniaturized, electronic detector capable of detecting almost all the explosives widely used by antisocial elements and in Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) was unveiled in the workshop.

India’s largest cancer hospital ‘National Cancer Institute (NCI)’ opened in Jhajjar, Haryana

  • National Cancer Institute (NCI) which is the largest cancer hospital of India built at a cost of Rs 2035 crore opened for public in Jhajjar, Haryana but the formal inauguration will be held in January 2019.

  • NCI is a project under All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi and it will be headed by Dr. GK Rath who is the Chief of Institute of Rotary Cancer Hospital in AIIMS.

  • The NCI will be the nodal institution for all the activities related to cancer in the country and it will have linkage with other cancer institutes of the country.

Haryana CM inaugurated World Herbal Forest Project in Morni Hill

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the World Herbal Forest Project, a collaboration of Patanjali and Haryana Government, at Morni Hill, near Chandigarh.

  • The project covers over 52,000 acres of land in Morni Hills and is aimed at developing a forest of medicinal plants which will provide a huge boost to the Ayurvedic industry across the country.

  • About 25 different varieties of plants found in the country will be housed in this forest.

  • 50,000 plants each of 20 medicinal varieties are being sown in the first phase of the project.

A UNESCO Category 2, International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography, inaugurated at INCOIS, Hyderabad

  • Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Environment and Forests & Climate Change, Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the newly constructed International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCO ocean) Complex in the INCOIS campus at Hyderabad, Telangana.

  • He dedicated the ITCO ocean to the Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee and named the academic building as Atal Bhavan and the Guest House as Atal Atithi Griha.

  • This UNESCO category 2 centre was established by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. of India earlier in 2013 but it upgraded to assist UNESCO and its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

India’s first music museum to be set up in Thiruvaiyaru

  • The country’s first music museum will be set up with assistance from the Central government in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamilnadu, the birth place of Saint Tyagaraja, one of the Trinities of Carnatic music.

  • This was announced by the State Minister for Culture and Tamil Development K Pandiarajan in Madurai.

  • The Tyagaraja Aaradhana Music Festival which is held annually in January in Thiruvaiyaru attracts musical talents from all over the world.

  • Modi Government has decided to rename three islands in Andaman and Nicobar Ross Island as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to visit Port Blair to mark the 75th anniversary of Netaji's historic visit to the islands, is likely to make the announcement of name change.
