Delhi will celebrate its first-ever dragonfly festival starting.

The festival - jointly being organized by WWF India and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) will have fun events on both dragonflies and damselfly species, and will culminate towards a dragonfly census on August.

The dragonflies and damselflies - similar to dragonflies and belonging to the same family - play a key role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and are crucial in controlling mosquito population.

In the past, Delhi had recorded 51 dragonfly and damselfly species.

However, the documentation is quite old and was done decades ago.

We plan to collect fresh data on dragonfly and damselfly species in the city, just like the butterfly census of last year centre-manager at BNHS in Asola.

The festival will be inaugurated on August 3 at the WWF auditorium, with some special events, including 'Be a scientist for a day', 'Date with a dragonfly’, 'Field trips at Okhla bird sanctuary' and campus counts across NCR.

Teams from BNHS and WWF India will carry out the census on August 19, mapping species from different areas across NCR.

These are the kind of chips that India always wanted, but could not make.

Now, computer scientists and a student team from the IIT - Madras have developed the first of a family of six industry-standard microprocessors.

The initial batch of 300 chips, named RISECREEK and produced under Project Shakti, have been fabricated free at Intel’s facility at Oregon, U.S., to run the Linux operating system.

The IIT team says its microprocessors can be adapted by others, as the design is open source.

They optimise power use and compete with international units such as the Cortex A5 from Advanced RISC Machines (ARM).

The Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR) of Sikkim, the highest biosphere reserve in the country that includes the third highest mountain peak in the world, Kanchenjunga (8,586m), has been included in the UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WHBR).

The decision was taken at the International Coordinating Council of Man and Biosphere Reserve Programme, UNESCO, in its 30^th Session held at Palembang, Indonesia, last month.

With the inclusion of the KBR, one of the highest ecosystems in the world, reaching elevations of 1,220m to 8,586m above sea level, the number of biosphere reserves from the country included in World Network of Biosphere Reserves has increased to 11.

Hectic preparations are under way in Hubballi as the Chief Justice of India, Justice Dipak Mishra, is scheduled to visit the city for the inauguration of the fully airconditioned multi-storey court complex.

Already several rounds of preparatory meetings have been conducted by the authorities in which apart from officials of the district administration, judges from the High Court of Karnataka and Dharwad Bench, office-bearers of bar association have taken part to finalise the programme.

Since the Chief Justice of India is participating in the event apart from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the authorities are taking every precaution especially in following the protocols.

Various committees have been formed to oversee preparations for the event and a huge pandal is being erected adjacent to the court building for the public function being organised to mark the occasion.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Deepa Cholan has been monitoring the preparations on a daily basis, while some judges and officials of the High Court of Karnataka have been camping in Hubballi for the purpose.

The complex has come up in an area of 5 acres 15 guntas and a total of ₹122 crore has been spent for the project, which was taken up in two phases.

Parts of the national capital will now enjoy free Wi-Fi and high-speed broadband as Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched a slew of "smart city" projects.

The IIT Kharagpur will set up a Re-Water Research Center, seed-funded by two alumni members to replenish and rejuvenate water resources, a statement issued by the institute.

The 'Aditya Choubey Center for Re-Water Research' would be networking with government bodies to take up this technology and the process and meet the water challenge in various cities.

The BJP government in Chhattisgarh decided to name Naya Raipur, the upcoming capital city of the state, as 'Atal Nagar' in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Besides the capital, several other government institutions and projects will be named after Vajpayee, who died last week.

Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu announced that Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has been renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport.

The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to change the name of the airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, adding “Maharaj” to both.

The Bharatiya Janata Partyled state government announced the Maratha warrior deserves more respect.

The airport was earlier known as the Sahar International Airport while the railway station – a Unesco Heritage Site – was called Victoria Terminus.

They were renamed in 1995 after the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance came to power in the state. In 2016, the BJP government in Haryana renamed Gurgaon, which became Gurugram, and changed the name of Mewat to Nuh.
