Kadaknath chicken meat from Jhabua gets GI tag

  • The famous Kadaknath chicken meat from Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh has now got a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • The tag denotes that the product comes from a particular geographical area, and often enhances its commercial value.
  • A Chhattisgarh-based organisation too had sought similar recognition for the Kadaknath chickens bred in Dantewada district, but Jhabua's claim seems to have prevailed.
  • The Gramin Vikas Trust of Krishak Bharati Cooperative (KRIBHCO) had sought GI tag for the protein-rich and black coloured meat of Kadaknath variety of chicken, which is mainly reared in Jhabua.
  • As per the information available on the Geographical Indications Registry, India, the application, made in the category.

Delhi celebrates its first ever dragonifly festival

  • Delhi will celebrate its first-ever dragonfly festival starting.

  • The festival - jointly being organized by WWF India and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) will have fun events on both dragonflies and damselfly species, and will culminate towards a dragonfly census on August.

  • The dragonflies and damselflies - similar to dragonflies and belonging to the same family - play a key role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and are crucial in controlling mosquito population.

  • In the past, Delhi had recorded 51 dragonfly and damselfly species.

  • However, the documentation is quite old and was done decades ago.

  • We plan to collect fresh data on dragonfly and damselfly species in the city, just like the butterfly census of last year centre-manager at BNHS in Asola.

  • The festival will be inaugurated on August 3 at the WWF auditorium, with some special events, including 'Be a scientist for a day', 'Date with a dragonfly’, 'Field trips at Okhla bird sanctuary' and campus counts across NCR.

  • Teams from BNHS and WWF India will carry out the census on August 19, mapping species from different areas across NCR.

Mughalsarai Station renamed as Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah inaugurated the new Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction railway station, which was earlier known as Mughalsarai.

  • Decked-up in saffron colour now, the station is one of the oldest and biggest railway junctions in the state.

  • The renaming of the iconic railway station was proposed by Yogi Adityanath in August last year, and was later approved by the Centre.

IIT Madras develops first indigenous microprocessors under project shakti called RISECREEK

  • These are the kind of chips that India always wanted, but could not make.

  • Now, computer scientists and a student team from the IIT - Madras have developed the first of a family of six industry-standard microprocessors.

  • The initial batch of 300 chips, named RISECREEK and produced under Project Shakti, have been fabricated free at Intel’s facility at Oregon, U.S., to run the Linux operating system.

  • The IIT team says its microprocessors can be adapted by others, as the design is open source.

  • They optimise power use and compete with international units such as the Cortex A5 from Advanced RISC Machines (ARM).

Jaisalmer to host India Baja 2018 India Baja 2018

  • The Indian edition of the greatest challenge of all extreme motorsport competitions in the world, will be organised from August 17-19 among the dunes of Jaisalmer.

  • In its third consecutive run, the race will comprise over 400 kilometres of gruelling 'Special Stages' and over 150 km of 'Transport Stages', covering some of the toughest off-road terrain in India.

  • The distinguishing factor about the India Baja 2018 comes from the fact that the top Indian contender will get a direct entry to the pinnacle of all off-road races in the world - the Dakar Rally of 2020.

Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve enters UNESCO list

  • The Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve (KBR) of Sikkim, the highest biosphere reserve in the country that includes the third highest mountain peak in the world, Kanchenjunga (8,586m), has been included in the UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WHBR).

  • The decision was taken at the International Coordinating Council of Man and Biosphere Reserve Programme, UNESCO, in its 30th Session held at Palembang, Indonesia, last month.

  • With the inclusion of the KBR, one of the highest ecosystems in the world, reaching elevations of 1,220m to 8,586m above sea level, the number of biosphere reserves from the country included in World Network of Biosphere Reserves has increased to 11.

IIT-Bombay to get Rs 1,000 crore financial aid

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a financial aid of Rs 1,000 crore to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

  • The convocation ceremony of IIT Bombay, the Prime Minister announced IIT Bombay will get a financial aid of Rs 1000 crore.

  • It was a large number of IIT students, who built the IT sector of India, brick by brick''.

  • The Prime Minister stated that innovations and enterprise are going to be the foundation stone for making India a developed economy and further voiced his hope that a long-term sustainable technology-led economic growth is possible on this foundation.

CJI inaugurated the new court complex in Hubballi

  • Hectic preparations are under way in Hubballi as the Chief Justice of India, Justice Dipak Mishra, is scheduled to visit the city for the inauguration of the fully airconditioned multi-storey court complex.

  • Already several rounds of preparatory meetings have been conducted by the authorities in which apart from officials of the district administration, judges from the High Court of Karnataka and Dharwad Bench, office-bearers of bar association have taken part to finalise the programme.

  • Since the Chief Justice of India is participating in the event apart from Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, the authorities are taking every precaution especially in following the protocols.

  • Various committees have been formed to oversee preparations for the event and a huge pandal is being erected adjacent to the court building for the public function being organised to mark the occasion.

  • Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Deepa Cholan has been monitoring the preparations on a daily basis, while some judges and officials of the High Court of Karnataka have been camping in Hubballi for the purpose.

  • The complex has come up in an area of 5 acres 15 guntas and a total of ₹122 crore has been spent for the project, which was taken up in two phases.

Jammu, Agartala to get Space Research Technology centre

  • Union minister Jitendra Singh informed Jammu and Tripura will get the country's first full-fledged Space Technology Research Centre.

  • While the first centre in north India will function under the aegis of Jammu-based Central University, the Tripura centre will work under the aegis of Agartala-based National Institute of Technology (NIT).

  • These centres will devote to research, academics and post graduation study.

  • They will offer an opportunity for scholars and youngsters who have aptitude for space science to explore a new career and research option.

  • The minister made the announcement on the beginning of year-long "Sarabhai Centenary" programmes of ISRO, the 99th birth anniversary of Dr Vikram Sarabhai.

  • In another kid outreach programme like NASA, ISRO is going to teach schoolchildren in space activities to develop their "scientific temper".

  • The space agency will organise training camps for students for 25 to 30 days.

  • These students will be educated on space activities and will be taken to the space laboratory and launch facilities.

  • They will also be allowed to make their small satellite''.

Delhi gets free Wi-Fi, fast broadband under 'smart city' project

  • Parts of the national capital will now enjoy free Wi-Fi and high-speed broadband as Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh launched a slew of "smart city" projects.

  • During the inauguration at the Charkha Park in Connaught Place, Singh informed that the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), by successfully launching the smart city initiative, has set an example before other aspiring smart cities in the country to follow.

  • A special film festival on the theme “Freedom Struggle and Freedom Fighters” began in Mumbai.

  • The festival is organized by the Films Division to mark India’s 72nd Independence Day.

  • The festival was organized by Films Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

  • It was inaugurated by Smt. Rama Khandwala, a freedom fighter and Indian National Army (INA) veteran.

  • Documentary films on freedom struggle and freedom fighters were screened at the festival.

IIT Kharagpur launches ‘Aditya Choubey Center for Re-Water Research’

  • The IIT Kharagpur will set up a Re-Water Research Center, seed-funded by two alumni members to replenish and rejuvenate water resources, a statement issued by the institute.

  • The 'Aditya Choubey Center for Re-Water Research' would be networking with government bodies to take up this technology and the process and meet the water challenge in various cities.

  • The move is to tackle the challenge of resolving two burning issues faced by urban India sewage disposal and access to clean potable water on the 68th Foundation Day of the premier institution.

Odisha Government to Set Up world-class Interpretation Centre at Bhitarkanika National Park

  • The Odisha government has decided to set up a state-of-the-art interpretation centre at Bhitarkanika National Park to showcase its flora, fauna and rich biodiversity.

  • At present, the national park has an interpretation centre at Dangmal but it has proved to be inadequate in preserving the vast reserve of the finest biodiversity hotspots of the state.

  • The centre which will be of international standard is coming up under Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme.

  • The project, which has been approved under the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme (ICZMP), will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore.

  • The construction of the centre will get underway in winter, ICZMP project director, Sushant Nanda informed.

  • The conservation measures for protecting crocodiles in their natural habitat and preserving the rich mangrove diversity in Bhitarkanika wetland sites will be exhibited at the proposed centre.

Naya Raipur to be named as Atal Nagar in memory of Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • The BJP government in Chhattisgarh decided to name Naya Raipur, the upcoming capital city of the state, as 'Atal Nagar' in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

  • Besides the capital, several other government institutions and projects will be named after Vajpayee, who died last week.

  • These decisions were taken during the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh at Mantralaya (state secretariat).

  • Acknowledging the historic contribution of Atal ji in the formation of the state in 2000, Naya Raipur will be named as 'Atal Nagar' and a memorial of Atal ji will be built there.

  • Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje opened the country's biggest incubation centre, Bhamashah Techno Hub, in Jhalana Industrial Area of Jaipur, which will provide start-ups with a unique platform to evolve into accomplished organisations.

  • Rajasthan is disrupting the start-up scene in the country, with tech hubs flourishing across Kota, Udaipur and Jaipur.

  • In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' initiative, states like Karnataka, Telangana, and Maharashtra are already providing various platforms for aspiring start-ups.

  • But now, Rajasthan has also joined the race.

  • Spread over 1 lakh sq ft, the techno hub is to be India's largest incubator centre, which will house around 700 start-ups under one roof.

  • This state-of-the-art tech hub will offer world-class facilities to startups working on innovative ideas and futuristic technologies ventures.

Mumbai airport renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

  • Union Minister for Civil Aviation Suresh Prabhu announced that Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport has been renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport.

  • The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to change the name of the airport and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, adding “Maharaj” to both.

  • The Bharatiya Janata Partyled state government announced the Maratha warrior deserves more respect.

  • The airport was earlier known as the Sahar International Airport while the railway station – a Unesco Heritage Site – was called Victoria Terminus.

  • They were renamed in 1995 after the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance came to power in the state. In 2016, the BJP government in Haryana renamed Gurgaon, which became Gurugram, and changed the name of Mewat to Nuh.

Amethi’s PIndara Thakur village went digital from September 1

  • Pindara Thakur village under coveted Amethi parliamentary constituency of Congress president Rahul Gandhi would go fully digital from September one, having access to 206 government services at the click of a mouse, thanks to Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.

  • Located in Musafirkhana tehsil of the district, the village would go digital under the Digital India Programme of the Union government.

  • The village would be digitally linked to the outside world in a formal ceremony on September 1 by Irani, dubbed as Gandhi's arch-rival, working overtime to unseat him in the next Lok Sabha elections.
